This is a charming Eng-lish home picture; the cheerful house, the creepingvines and flowers, the tame pea-hen, and the sun-dials,— why, even the printed words peacocks andsun-dials give a picture of English country life! Thehouse is about a hundred years old, and in 1891 thedials were nearly obliterated and the gnomons gone, but the dials have now been restored. The south-east dial is inscribed, the hour is at hand ; the southwest, WATCH AND PRAY. I have never seen in America a vertical dial ofthe third class, — namely, on a corbel, though thelatter forms a most effective piece of architecturaldecoration as well as a useful one.
