Bornean Orangutan at Semenggoh Nature Reserve, Kuching, Sarawak, Malaysia, island of Borneo
I was fortunate enough to first visit Semenggoh Reserve in 1992 and have done regularly since. Watching some of the Orang-utans grown up has been a privilege. The reserve takes in apes that have been in human captivity, as pets or worse, and rehabilitated into the wild. Those that can, or need to be, are later migrated to another centre in Matang. Some stay for years for the care they can get and also used in a breeding program, which permits regular visitors to see some grow. The number that can be viewed varies daily, as fruit in the forest will mean some have no need to return for the feeding times. I’ve seen between 3 and 12 on my visits, but this is nature and there are no guarantees. The translation of the name is “man of the forest” and they certainly are. To see a mother training a child is something special to see.
