Myocardial infarction. A myocardial infarction is a necrosis of a part of the cardiac muscle following the discontinuation of the blood intake (ischemia). The latter is most often due to an obstruction of a coronary artery. The obstruction is often due to the presence of a plaque of atheroma on the wall of the artery and the formation of a thrombus. The factors of risk are smoking, high blood pressure, stress and sedentarity.
