Black 1960s ceremonial Land Rovers Series 2A Escort Rover (30XC27) next to its matching Review Rover (30XC16). Automotive trademarks are the property of the trademark holder, authorization may be needed for some uses. --- Information: Vehicles 30 XC 16 and 30 XC 27 started life in 1962 as early Series IIA military specification 88 inch wheelbase vehicles but, due their X-series registration plates, they were destined for service in West Berlin with British troops based in the divided city. At some stage after arriving in Berlin, possibly as late as 1967, they were converted by the REME (Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers) workshop that was part of the British Berlin Brigade, using locally-purchased components. The existence of matching Escort and Review vehicles tends to support the theory that the conversion was done with a royal visit in mind. Tradition has it that they were converted for a visit by the Queen Mother, but this is not confirmed. What is known, however, is that the pair were used for VIP transport on many formal occasions over the next thirty or so years, but as their patch was so small, mileages were very low. They were also maintained in first rate condition, being stored indoors in heated garages. The British Berlin Brigade remained in existence until 1994, being finally disbanded some five years after reunification, at which time its vehicles were demobbed.
