Quarr Abbey 1911 Binstead Isle of Wight Hampshire
Quarr Abbey was designed by the French Benedictine monk Dom Paul Louis Denis Bellot. This Benedictine Order was exiled from France taking residence on the Isle of Wight in 1901. Bellot joined the Order in 1902 as a qualified architect and was ordained at Quarr in 1911 in the Iron Chapel installed there by the monks upon residence in 1907. Bellot was commissioned to design the new monastery in which can be seen Spanish and Moorish traits. The monastic church was completed in 1911 by 300 local artisans to serve 100 monks & is constructed of Belgian & Dutch brick. It is considered Bellot's finest work. He died in Canada during 1944. The ancient Quarr Abbey was part of a Cistercian monastery, founded in 1132 by Baldwin de Redvers, Earl of Devon and fourth Lord of the Isle of Wight.
