The first productionsunder the new rule showed a very slight in-crease in dis|)lacement, a decrease in draught,and a considerable increase in sail area ; whilstthe body form of the boats, though it still keptto the plate and bulb in most cases, showed atendency towards a deepening of the midshipsection, and ]Mnching in of the beam, while theoverhang and pram bow form continued tobecome WtSTRA The season opened in the 36 foot class withfour new boats from the Albert yard, all fromMr. C. Sibbicks design ; these were Hearts-ease for Mr. C. L. Orr-Ewing, , Ermin,Mr. C. A. Tonge, Silvia, Mr. A. H. E. Wood,and Westra, Mr. J- C Connell : theyaveraged about 31 feet on the with 9 feet6 inches beam, and 5 feet 9 inches draught, andcarried 1250 to 1300 square feet of additions came from Messrs. Camper andNicholsons at Gosport, but neither were of muchaccount. Mr. Fife had one new boat Fern,and Mr. Arthur Payne produced Emerald ;whilst Mr. C. P. Clayton made a bold moveand built a heavy displacement boat with section. The result of the racing was that \Vestra and• Heartsease werethe ])ick of the fleet,whilst Emerald had too heavy abulb, and Mr. Clay-tons boat, Edie,had overdone it inthe way of displace-ment. Westraand Emerald were the best per-formers in hardwinds, but thebalance was con-siderably in favourof the former
