Sanicula bipinnatifida is rela- tively shade-intolerant, occurring on very dry to moderately dry, nitrogen-rich, moder or mull humus form soils (Klinka et al. 1989). Early spring condi- tions are moist, facilitating germination and growth before the onset of summer drought. Specific habi- tats include grass-forb meadow openings in Pseudotsuga menziesii-Aibniws {Arbutus menziesii) forests, Quercus garryana-Arbutus menziesii stands, eroding, sandy banks on seashore cliffs, and shrub- by, grassy knolls. On southeastern Vancouver Island, Sanicula bipinnatifida is mainly a component of the spring flora (April-May), but may persist into late June. Many of the associated species in all sites are introduced. In one instance, S. bipinnatifida was found on a shrubby-grassy knoll dominated by Idaho Fescue (Festuca idahoensis). Common Hawthorn (Crata- egus monogyna), Scotch Broom {Cytisus scoparius), and Kentucky Bluegrass (Poa pratensis), the latter three of which are Please note that these images are extracted from scanned page images that may have been digitally enhanced for readability - coloration and appearance of these illustrations may not perfectly resemble the original Ottawa Field-Naturalists' Club.
