Southern Iraq Ba'ath regime checkpoint, Iraqi Security services salute the portrait of the President, Saddam Hussein and Ba'ath

Ba'ath Party security services in southern Iraq at a desert road checkpoint give the victory sign beside a portrait of the President, Saddam Hussein dressed in military uniform. A year after the end of the Iran-Iraq war Saddam Hussein allowed a delegation of foreign journalists to participate on a guided tour of Iraq closely shadowed by his security services at all times. I, Sheri Laizer, was on the tour along with producer Jonathan Frost. The Observer journalist, Farzad Basoft, was detained by the Ba'ath regime on allegations of spying during this trip. I took this photograph when our coach, arranged by our Ba'ath hosts, stopped at a checkpoint in the desert south of Baghdad.
