A branch of red Mediterranean coral (Strait of Gibraltar). The red coral (Corallium rubrum) is the carbonate of lime axis of a Gorgonian stem (Gorgonidae - Alcyonaria Group), chiefly found in the Mediterranean Sea. It lives in semi-dark habitats in the coralligenous zone of sublittoral hard bottoms. Gathered commercially for jewellery, Torre del Greco in Italy is the main centre of coral working industries. Elle est le squelette en carbonate de chaux d'une tige de gorgone (Gorgonidae - Groupe Alcyonaire), principalement trouvée en Mer Méditerranée. Ce corail vit dans un habitat rocheux semi-obscur de la zone coralligène sublittorale. Collecté commercialement pour la confection de bijoux, Torre del Greco - en Italie - est l'endroit principal pour le travail de celui-ci. Photographie prise en studio sur fond noir.
