Pin facing on, placing the right side to rightside of coat. Pin this on so it is a little easierthan the coat material, baste on outer edgeof tape, cut away canvas on outside of thetape, and stitch the edges of coat and facingtogether one-eighth of an inch beyond theedge of tape and THE LINING OF THE COAT I42 The Dress You Wear 143 Pull basting, cut away one-half of the seamon one edge, which should be the edge of thecoat proper. Press seam open flat. Turn both edges of seam (but not the fac-ing) over on tape and canvas being carefulto have edge flat and smooth in the turning,and the narrow edge of seam you just turnedoff should lie underneath the wide side of full-width seam. Cat-stitch firmly to linen. Turn facing,crease in line of stitching, and baste along edgeof coat, also seam. Hold work in left handand baste the entire facing over the linen,using the diagonal basting as you did to bastethe linen to front of coat, only this time youhold the work over the left hand slightlyrolling to have the facing basted in easy. Miscellaneous Stitch against the pile in velvets, plushes,and corduroy, and seams are less noticeable. 144 The Dress You Wear Clip basting every three or four inches andremove as soon as stitching is done.
