St John's Smith Square. South west tower; by Thomas Archer between 1713 and 1728.

St John Smith Square. One of the 'Fifty New Churches' or 'Queen Anne Churches'. Built in the Baroque style by Thomas Archer between 1713 and 1728. The tower at the south- west corner tower: the height was reduced 'without the Consent or Knowledge of Mr Archer'. Charles Dickens heartily disliked St John's: in Our Mutual Friend he describes it as 'a very hideous church with four towers at the four corners, generally resembling some petrified monster, frightful and gigantic, on its back with its legs in the air'.
