Roma Agrawal MBE, Structural Engineer and Author, giving a talk entitled, "How to build a skyscraper", on the Engineering Stage, at New Scientist Live 2019.

s cities become ever denser, we are witnessing buildings getting higher and higher, as records are broken every few years. What are the key materials that enable these huge structures to be built? Who are the visionaries behind the design of these? How do they stand up? To find out more, hear from star structural engineer and author Roma Agrawal, who spent six years of her career on the team that designed The Shard. Roma Agrawal is a structural engineer who builds big. From footbridges and sculptures, to train stations and skyscrapers ? including The Shard ? she has left an indelible mark on London’s landscape. She is a tireless promoter of engineering to young people, particularly under-represented groups such as women. She has given talks to thousands around the world at universities, schools and organisations, including two for TEDx. She is a television presenter, and writes articles about engineering, education and leadership. Roma has been awarded the prestigious Royal Academy of Engineering’s Rooke Award, and an MBE in 2018. Her award-winning first book "Built" was published by Bloomsbury to glowing review last year. Roma Agrawal, MBE FICE (born March 1983), is an Indian-British-American chartered structural engineer based in London. She has worked on several major engineering projects, including the Shard. Agrawal is also a diversity campaigner, championing women in engineering. She spent six years working on the tallest building in Western Europe, the Shard, designing the foundations and the iconic spire. She describes the project as a career highlight: "I think projects like that only come once or twice in your career, so I feel very fortunate to have had the opportunity to work on this". The 1,016-foot (310 m) tall structure required a top-down construction methodology, which had never been done before on a building of this scale. The spire required modular construction that could be built and tested off-site.
