The city government of St. Peters-burg has been so alarmed at the rav-ages of drunkenness, that sa-loons in that city have been closed, andonly under the control of thestate, have been substituted for them,and certain limits have been placed up-on the amount of liquor sold in WOMANJ^iRK WOMANS CHRISTIAN TEMPER-ANCE UNION. Although some of the members hadnot returned from their vacations, thefirst meeting of the W. C. T. U. waswell attended Sept. 5th. All seemedenthusiastic to begin a new yearswork. The State Convention and thelocal Annual meeting come this yearupon the same date, therefore it wasvoted to hold the annual meeting onSept. 19th. Reports of work by theUnion and by Superintendents of De-partments will then be given and offi-cers for the coming year will be elect-ed. The twenty-fourth annual conventionof the Connecticut Womans Chris-tian Temperance Union will be held inthe Congregational Church, Valley St.,Willimantic. Oct. 3, 4. 5. 1899.
