Captain Grugan joined the Second Cavalry on thePlains, and served at Forts Laramie and Casper, Wyoming,and in the field during 1866-67; then at Camp Stam-baugh, Wyoming ; Fort Ellis, Montana; and in the fieldfrom 1870 to 1873. He was then detailed on signal duty,under the chief signal-officer of the army, from 1873 to1879, when he was ordered to the Artillery School atFort Monroe, Virginia, he having been transferred to theSecond Artillery, April 11, 1879, as first lieutenant, hehaving reached that rank in the cavalry November 1, After remaining at Fort Monroe until 1882, he wasplaced on special duty with the chief signal-officer of thearmy from June to October of the same year, when hewas relieved, and served with a light battery at Washing-ton City until March, 1885. He was promoted captainMarch [8, 1885, and commanded Battery B, SecondArtillery, at Fort Barrancas, Florida, to March, this time he was transferred to Light Battery A, andserved with it at Little Rock Barracks, Arkansas, andFort Riley, Kansas, to July, 1S91. Upon being relieved from light battery duty he wasordered to Fort Adams, Rhode Island, in command ofBattery H, and is at the present time on duty at thatstation. Captain Grugan filled the position of aide and actingassistant adjutant-general of the First Brigade, FirstDivision, Third Army Corps, in the Army of the Potomac,to April, 1864.
