Oil refinery worker checking a safety valve on top of a tower in the hydrofining area of an oil refinery. The hydrofining area is where crude oil products are processed to remove impurities such as sulphur. This equipment is part of a SCANfining unit that uses a proprietary catalyst system developed by ExxonMobil, together with Akzo Nobel. SCANfining (Selective Cat Naphtha hydrofining) uses a catalyst called RT-225. It minimises hydrogenation of olefins. This preserves the octane rating of the final petrol or jet fuel products, and also reduces the consumption of hydrogen. Photographed at ExxonMobil's Fawley Oil Refinery, Hampshire, UK.
