This old reaper embodied all the essential work-ing principles of the reaper of to-day, drawing its energy from the revolutionof the main wheel as it traveled, which drove back and forward a bar ofserrated teeth, playing through guards. All the reapers since have been butrefinements of this, retaining the fundamental devices. Nearby was an old print showing the scene at Steeles Tavern in Virginiain 1831, twenty years before the Crystal Palace Exposition, when the firstreaper was tested.
