The in-cessant toil for a mere subsistence upon a compara-tively sterile farm, had no charm for him ; and, longingfor greater usefulness and better things, he looked forthem in an education. His struggles to secure thisend necessitated sacrifices and hardships that wouldhave discouraged any but the most courageous andpersevering.
