The use of electricity for public lightingin London seems to date from about theyear 1878, when several experimentalinstallations were attempted. The Chair-man of to-night, Colonel Crompton, wasassociated with some of the very earliestpioneering work in this direction. In 1877he lighted his own factory by electricity,and by 1878 he was already constructingelectric arc lamps of his own 1881 he was responsible for lightingseveral railway stations by electricity,and about the same year the RoyalCourts of Justice were illuminated byincandescent lamps—one of the first largeinstallations of this kind in E
