Cellblock 2 in the Eastern State Penitentiary
The Eastern State Penitentiary was built in 1822 1836 on a radial plan by John Haviland It originally featured seven cell blocks spread like the spokes of a wheel and had running water and central heat even before the White House It was the first true penitentiary a prison designed to inspire penitence or true regret in the hearts of prisoners It became a model for over 300 prisons worldwide It closed in 1971
