Brazil, Rio de Janeiro: Group of tourists posing for a photograph in front of the iconic Christo Redentor statue on Corcovado. --- Info: Christ the Redeemer (Portuguese: O Cristo Redentor) is a statue of Jesus Christ in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The monument, considered the largest art deco statue in the world, stands metres tall (including its metre pedestal) and 30 metres wide; and is located at the peak of the 700 metres Corcovado mountain in the Tijuca Forest National Park overlooking Rio's city. The idea for erecting a large statue atop Corcovadogoes back to the mid 1850s, but construction was finally undertaken between 1922 and 1931. The monument was opened on October 12, 1931. A symbol of Christianity, the statue has become an icon of Rio and Brazil.
