Christopher Columbus departing from Palos, Spain, on August 3rd, 1492. After Ricardo Balaca (1844-1880). On the evening of 3rd August 1492, Columbus departed from Palos de la Frontera with three ships. The largest was a carrack, the Santa María, owned and captained by Juan de la Cosa. The other two were smaller caravels, the Pinta and the Niña, piloted by the Pinzón brothers.
