Light-mantled albatross (Phoebetria palpebrata). This bird is relatively small for an albatross, but its wingspan can still reach 2 metres. It glides for long distances and spends much of its time at sea. It feeds on squid, krill, fish and carrion. The species is also known as the light- mantled sooty albatross; it is closely related to the sooty albatross (P. fusca). Light-mantled albatrosses nest on islands in the southern oceans. Some populations are threatened by fishing. Photographed on South Georgia Island.
