. billion years ago, long before park, mountains or even advanced life, the area of land now known as Glacier National Park, was home to a giant inland sea. This shallow sea, the Belt, lay down mud sediments rich with iron. Both the ripple marks and the rust color of this rock - now high in Glacier's alpine - help to demonstrate how long this place has been in the Marks.
