The Knight brace, whencarefully adjusted, appears to meet the requirements fairly well, and when less support is needed an ordinary corset strengthenedby light steels may be sufficient. Even in cases of this charactercorrective exercises should be employed with the aim of preserv-ing as far as possible the flexibility of the spine. Fig. Congenital scoliosis. After treatment for three years by forcible correction andfixation by plaster jackets. Showing the disappearance of the rotation. SUPPLEMENTAL TREATMENT. The Removal of Superincumbent Weight.—The removal of super-incumbent weight by the assumption of the reclining posturewhenever the patient is fatigued is an important adjunct in thetreatment. The patient should lie, preferably, upon a hardsupport in the supine posture, with the arms extended abovethe head. If the dorsal kyphosis is exaggerated, a firm cushionbetween the shoulders or under the projecting ribs will aid toexpansion of the chest and favor the correction of the deformity. Self-suspension.—Self-suspension, by means of the halter andpulley, is of service in overcoming secondary contractions of thetissues, and thus it aids in the correction of deformity. It isoften efficacious, also, in relieving the discomfort that is some- LATERAL CURVATURE OF THE SPINE. 221 time
