The Blohm + Voss dock Elbe 17 dry dock on the river Elbe at Hamburg Port in Hamburg, Germany. It is Germany's largest, third-busiest seaport in Europe and the world’s fifteenth largest. The port is 110 kilometres from the North Sea. The dock was completed in 1942 and was originally intended for the construction of the massive H-class battleships. During World War II, it was to be used for repair work on the battleship, ‘Bismarck’ but was sunk by the British navy before she could use it. Today, the dock is primarily used for refurbishing and repairing ships, although it can also be used for the construction of new vessels.
