Valetta City Archway or entrance gate, Malta

The first gate leading into Valletta was built by Tomaso Dingli. The new fortified city of La Vallette needed an entrance,a central archway with a smaller arch at each side, plus a drawbridge. In 1853 another gate was put up as a replacement to the original one, designed by Col. Thompson of the Royal Engineers, and consisting of two central arches with two smaller ones. Back then it was called ‘Porta Reale’ which means literally royal door. The Maltese unceremoniously corrupted the words ‘Porta Reale’ into ‘putirjal’, which is still commonly used today. Many called it ‘Kingsway’ which was in tune with the British colonial tradition.
