Some tests were madein the Nurhberg central station whichshowed this very clearly. The station isprovided with two tandem compound en-gines of 450 horse power, direct coupledto the dynamos and working at 95 re-volutions per minute. In order toequalize the running with the great vari-ations of load which occur, a very heavyflywheel was used with arms of a channelsection. It was found that these armsoffered a great resistance to the air, andcreated a powerful draft, and so it wasdecided to cover the wheel with sheetiron in order toVreduce the resistance
