On cross section the induratedwhite area is seen to extend from the base of the ulcer, for a con-siderable distance, into the subcutaneous tissue of the labia. Microscopical Examination: This reveals an area of thickenedepithelium and an edematous subcutaneous tissue at the edge ofan ulcer. The ulcer shows superficial erosion with exudate of serum, fibrin, and polynuclear leucocytes; the base of granulation tissue SYPHILOM A V U L V JE. 425 extends through to the subcutaneous tissue and approximates awide zone of round cell infiltration, consisting of many plasma cellsand lymphocytes. This infiltration radiates in strands into thedeeper tissues and is associated with marked perivascular infiltration(Figs. 7 and 8).. Fig. 4. No. 2. The specimen from the left labium majus shows an ulcer3^ X 2 cm. with the gross characteristics of the one encounteredon the right labium. The ulcer is deeper and the induration is moremarked. Microscopical section reveals an histology almost identicalwith the ulcer on the right labium, with the exception that the peri-vascular infiltration is more extensive. 426 ARTHUR STEIN, Xo. 3. Consists of an oval mass, 9 X b% cm. somewhat firm, covered by thickened, dark integument. On cross section theentire area suggests edematous subcutaneous tissue with a firmcovering of skin. Microscopical section reveals an intact layer of
