The sacculus and utriculus lie in the osseous vestibule. The saccu-lus lies in the lower and front part, is oval in shape and measures THE MEMBRANOUS LABYRINTH 355 2 by 3 mm. It is smaller than the utriculus. It presents a thick-ened neuroepithelial area, the macula acustica sacculi. The sacculecommunicates with the cochlear duct by means of a small canal, theductus reuniens. Another canal, the ductus endolymphaticus, passesthrough the aqueductus vestibuli to end in a small sac under thedura, in the cranial cavity. This duct is met by a canal from theutriculus, the ductus utriculosaccular is, thereby giving an indirectcommunication between these two structures. The utriculus lies in the posterior and superior part of the bonyvestibule. It is larger than the preceding and its highest part com-municates with the ampullae of the superior and lateral membranous. Fig. 257.—Transverse section of the cochlea. semicircular canals. The lower medial part communicates with theampulla of the posterior canal. The central part communicates withthe lateral canal and above this with the common opening of theposterior and superior canals. The utriculus possesses a whitish, neuroepithelial area, the macula acustica utriadi. From the utriculusthe ductus utriculosaccularis passes to the ductus endolymphaticus. The membranous semicircular canals {dticti circidares) representcasts of the osseous canals, but are only one-fourth the diameterof the latter. In the ampuUas are found neuroepithelial areas, thecrista acustica. The semicircular canals seem to be the organs ofequilibrium, the canals being arranged, apparently, in the threedimensions of space. The membranous cochlea {ductus cochlearis) cochlear duct, or 356 THE EAR scala media is a limited portion of the scala vestibuli. From thespiral lamina the thin membrane of Reissner {membrana
