On a cliff of the Mississippi River near Alton, Illinois, a painting depicts a legendary winged monster who was said to devour men during the time of the mastodons. The Piasa, as the dragon-like creature was called, demolished whole villages until Ouatoga, a great Native American warrior chief, led 20 men and killed the monster.
