Im-portant contributions relating to the differential characters of remittent feverand its clinical history were made by him in 1846 ; our present knowledge ofthis disease rests mainly on the facts contained in these contributions andthose of Stewardson, Swett, Anderson, Stille, and Boiling (Flint, Inter-7tational Congress, 1876). Prof. L. P. Yandell mentions Fricks work on RenalDiseases as among the ablest of the contributions made to our literature bythe American profession [Proceedings of same). FOURTH PERIOD. 121 William Alexander Hammond, the son of Dr. J. W. Hammond and hiswife Sarah (Pinckney), was born at Annapolis, August 28th, 1828. He obtainedhis medical degree at the University of New York, 1848. In 1849 ^^ ^^^appointed Assistant Surgeon U. S. A. In i860 he succeeded Prof. Roby inthe chair of Anatomy and Physiology in the University of Maryland, andlectured upon these branches during the session of 1860-61. He introducedinto the curriculum here the study of histology. Through his efforts severalmicroscopes were placed in the museum, and in connection therewith one ofthe largest microscopical collections in the country was always at the com-mand of the students. In
