A great deal of difficultywas experienced in discharging the vats, since the un-agitatedportion of the charge would remain in the pointed bottom ofthe vat as a tough, putty-like mass, after all the liquid portionhad been discharged, and could only be washed out by meansof a stream of solution or water under pressure. In suchcases, the most effective procedure was to attach a 2-in. hose toone of the valves on the solution-line and sluice the materialout, under pressure furnished by the pump, into the launderleading to the corresponding decantation-vat.
