A late 19th century view of Harland & Wolff shipyard, formed in 1861 by Edward James Harland (1831–95) and Hamburg-born Gustav Wilhelm Wolff (1834–1913), who came to the UK at age 14. In 1858 Harland, then general manager, bought the small shipyard on Queen's Island from his employer Robert Hickson. Situated in Belfast, the capital and largest city of Northern Ireland, standing on the banks of the River Lagan on the east coast. Well-known ships built by the shipyard include the Olympic-class trio: RMS Titanic, RMS Olympic and RMS Britannic.
