Shays rebellion, induced by theheavy taxation caused by the Revolutionary war, occurred 178G-87. The State of Mainewas set oflF from Massachusetts in 1820, and in 1861 the village of Fall River wasacquired from Rhode Island in exchange for the town of Pawtucket and some otherterritory. Massachusetts, although greatly opposed to the war with England 1812-14, STATE OF furnished large numbers of seamen to the American navy, and during the Civil war gave146,730 soldiers and many sailors to the Union forces, and expended over ^$30,000,000on account of the war.
