Tombs, Graves, Srebrenica Genocide Memorial, Srebrenica
Bosnia and Herzegovina is renowned for its natural beauty and cultural heritage, music, architecture and festivals. It is a fascinating country to discover and a paradise for photographers. The country is home to 3 ethnic groups: Muslim Bosniaks which are the largest, Christian Orthodox Serbs second and Catholic Croats third. Wounds of the 1992-1995 Bosnian War remain visible in many places and peaceful multicultural cohabitation is still at risk. Srebenica was declared a safe place when French General Morillon stated the UN would protect local Muslim Boskiaks besieged in the Srebenica enclave from the Bosnian Serb army. The Serbs agreed to respect the United Nations protection provided Bosniaks were disarmed. Several years later, as a small number of UN Dutch troops stationed there, Bosnian troops rolled into Srebenica without a fight and massacred most Bosnian men in dreadful circumstances. Mass graves were filled with bodies. Only recently, a memorial cemetery was opened and Bill Clinton was one of the guest speakers of the opening ceremony.
