Commemoration of First World War (1914-1918) World War II,Second World War, WWII, WW2 military, army, history, soldier, memorial, day, background, battle, old, vintage, remembrance, historic monument depicting a First World War soldier is new war memorial commemorating more than 600 fallen soldiers from South Ribble. The war memorial was opened at a dedication ceremony of remembrance on Armistice Day with members of the fallen soldiers families invited.
The 15m monument depicting a First World War soldier at Dandy Brook Park, in Lostock Hall, alongside a peace garden. Now, the whole area could be given Centenary Field. Councillor Phil Smith, South Ribble Borough Council’s cabinet member with responsibility for Regeneration, Leisure and Healthy Communities, said: “It is extremely important that as a borough we remember all those who went to war and paid the ultimate sacrifice fighting for their country. “The creation of the Centenary Fields would be a fitting tribute and a lasting legacy to their bravery and also the tremendous efforts of those on the home front. “We are lucky in South Ribble to be spoilt for choice when it comes to quality parks and open spaces and we also want to ensure we protect those for the future. This is a fantastic way of doing that.” The scheme is being led by the National Playing Fields Association which is also encouraging schools to adopt their local war memorial and park so that the children can learn about their historical importance. South Ribble Borough Council’s Armed Forces Champion, Councillor Alan Ogilvie, said: “The council has a whole series of events planned to mark the anniversary of the First World War, including the brand new war memorial that will be erected in Lostock Hall. “The Association is looking to create one Centenary Field in every borough so if South Ribble could have two that would be fantastic and something to be really proud of.”
