Tortoise beetle. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) showing the underside of a green tortoise beetle (Cassida viridis). Its three pairs of jointed legs are visible, as are its antennae. This beetle gets its name from the sideways and forwards extensions of it body, which, from the top, resembles a tortoise's carapace. Tortoise beetles feed on leaves and some species are pests of gardens and crops. Magnification x40 when printed 10cm wide.
