Gallbladder removal. Surgeon removing a patient's gallbladder (a procedure called cholecystectomy), using a minimally-invasive technique. A laparoscope (an endoscope used on the abdomen) has been inserted through a small incision. The laparoscope provides a view of the gallbladder on a TV screen to guide surgery. Cholecystectomy is performed to treat gallbladder inflammation or gallstones. The gallbladder stores bile, a waste product that also helps to digest fats. Patients without the organ can live normally, but may need to follow a low-fat diet.
