In consequence of the secluded home and limitedmeans of his father, Millard enjoyed but slender ad-vantages for education in his early years. The com-mon schools, which he occasionally attended werevery imperfect institutions; and books were scarceand expensive. There was nothing then in his char-acter to indicate the brilliant career upon which hewas about to enter. H
