Ships part of Peary Arctic Expedition 1891-1901
Two unknown crew members photographed in front of twin ships Windward and Eric, 800 miles from the North Pole at Neurke, Greenland. These ships were a part of US naval commander Robert Peary's Arctic Expedition of 1898-1901. Peary became interested in Arctic exploration after a trip to Greenland in 1886. In April 1909, he was the first man to reach the North Pole. His claim to be the first to reach the North Pole has always been disputed, but is still usually accepted.
