In 1873 he was appointed AssistantSurgeon, United States Marine Hospital, Chicago, and in 1877 was promotedto Surgeon, which position he held until his resignation in 1886. Duringthis period he was Surgeon of the First Regiment. Illinois National his very active life he served on the staff of many of Chicagos prom-inent hospitals. The Policlinic had its origin with him, and to his exertionsand wise management are due the sound financial and professional successwhich that progressive institution enjoys today. He was its first and onlypresident up to the time of his death, and he possessed the absolute confidence.
