Underneath the animal coral is being built ; of itsrate of formation we require further definite infor-mation, but a single anemone of i millimetre diameterhas been known to bud out and form 693 grammesof coral in thirty-six months. Corals grow luxuriantlyin tropical waters, but of their food and of the con-ditions which affect them we have not as yet adequateknowledge. They have slitlike mouths within theircircles of tentacles, and, being fixed, are of courseincapable of searching for food in any way. Whencut open food is seldom found in their
