It is all very well to talksensibly now of the actual importance of reviews, and the realvalue of reviewers judgments ; but the fact remains that spiritswere broken, hearts were sickened, and authorship was cruellydiscouraged by the savage and reckless condemnations passed bythe Edinburgh Review in its early days.
