Light micrograph of a section through the skin covering a human fingertip, showing an oval-shaped Meissner's corpuscle (centre) surrounded by numerous densely-stained epidermal cells. The skin surface and outer epidermis are just visible at top left. Meissner's corpuscles are small, encapsulated sensory organs located in the dermis of skin, especially of the fingertips, soles of the feet and the erogenous zones. They function in the perception of light discriminatory touch, with a degree of sensitivity proportional to the proximity of receptors to one another. Magnification: x100 at 35mm size.
