In May ;of that year he was appointed Colonel of the Sixteenth In- Jdiana Regiment, and immediately after the battle of Bull |Run was ordered East with his regiment. In April, 1862, ,he was promoted to a Brigadier-Generalship, and was or- |dered to report to General Halleck, then at PittsbargLanding. He served with that army until he met his ideath, on the 3d of October, 1862. His brigade was hotly;engaged with the enemy, when reinforcements came to his •help. In swinging into line the reinforcements fell into |confusion, and then broke. It was while attempting toirallv them lie met his death.
