Part of historic Eigiau tramway and bridge from Dolgarrog to Llyn Eigiau. Built for construction of Eigiau dam and hydro scheme

The tramway route followed what was originally the former Cedryn Tramway (1861-1888) a narrow guage 4 mile long horse-powered route serving the old Cedryn slate quarry SW of Lake Eigiau. The route is south and almost parallel to the river Afon Porth-llwyd. It was converted to standard guage from the top of the Dolgarrog incline below the Coedty Reservoir to Lake Eigiau around about 1907. The Eigiau dam was built from 1911. The foundations of the dam were quite insufficient to hold the water especially after 26 inches of water fell in 5 days and in November 1925 the dam broke. The water flooded down over the Coedty Dam into the village of Dolgarrog with the loss of 17 lives.
