Both theusers and makers of power house appliances are expected to give their views andexperiences on subjects within the range of the department. In a paper recently presented before the Northeast Coast Instituteof Engineers and Shipbuilders (England), T. Messenger describedan effective method of strengthening copper steam pipes by placingon them a series of bands. The bands are made in halves with cot-tercd connections. In one instance cited by the author, a i2-in. pipecarrying steam at no lbs., the bands had a section 2 in. by 3-16 were spaced 6 in. from center to center. By arranging a specialdesign of flanges and bands this mode of strengthening the pipescan be applied at branches. This plan is of advantage in localizingthe rupture of the seam in brazed piping; with bands spaced asabove, the seam opening cannot exceed 4 in. i
