Olympic torch A flotilla joined the Olympic Torch as it was carried on a steamboat across Lake Windermere tonight. It made its 122-mile journey from the Robert Burns statue in Dumfries to finish in Bowness-on-Windermere ahead of a spectacular firework and dance party which is part of the London 2012 Festival. Olympic torch: Flame crosses Windermere on steam boat 22 June 2012 The Olympic flame has been carried on a steam boat on Windermere in the Lake District on day 34 of the torch relay. The relay started in Dumfries at the Robert Burns Statue, built to honour the famous Scottish poet. The Olympic flame boarded the historic steam boat Tern at Waterhead Pier to travel across to Bowness-on-Windermere. In one of the largest spectacles ever seen in the Lake District, the flame crossed the lake escorted by a hundred other vessels. An estimated five thousand people lined The Glebe, in Bowness-on-Windermere, to watch as torch-bearer Stephanie Booth Jan's nomination story Jan is County Chairman of Cumbria Young Farmers Clubs which has 1400 members aged 10 to 26 in 26 Clubs around Cumbria. YFC is a democratic youth organisation where all the decisions are made by the young members so Jan Chairs the council, is responsible for finance and supporting the Clubs and members. She also sits on Committees to represent the members at Area and National level. All these skills she has gained from her 10 years in YFC through taking part in public speaking, drama, sports stockjudging and being Club secretary etc. She also oversees all the many events the members do to raise money for Charity - last year they raised over £42000. Jan gives up most of her evenings to her work for YFC. Cumbrian life is based on farming and rural skills and it is important that this is reflected in your torchbearers. YFC makes life bearable for lots of rurally isolated young people and Jan is at the centre of that support. She lives and works near Bowness on Windermere so that leg would be ideal.
