Venice, Italy - 5 September 2017; two guys lounging at the top of a bridge watch a woman walking by. Venice is one of the great cities of the world, famed for its canals, sublime architecture, beauty and exotic history. It is also inundated by tourists for much of the year, stupidly expensive, often smelly and slowly sinking into the Adriatic. Oh dear - you pick. The canals of Venice are its life - blood; they are the most important way of getting around for local and tourists alike. Public transport by water busses - vaporetti - and water taxis is quick and efficient. Needless to say, only tourists use the gondolas! The canal banks are lined with historic palaces, hotels and churches, dating primarily from the 13th to 18th centuries.
