Treatment of Cucumeers. The single stem method of training cucnmbers has come into general use; it gives the grower more control over his plants. There is nothing so detri- mental to cncnmber growing as a snr- plus of vines, because little or no fruit will set in a tangled mass of foliage. Those growers who still train their plants on V-shaped trellises or overhead vines should see to it that too rnany shoots are not allowed to grow. Single stem plants need close attention now, to cut or pinch the side shoots in time, before they get too long. It is best to permit the side shoots to form one little bunch of cucumbers, and then pinch them, thus adding to the produc- tiveness to a large extent. Later on, another shoot can be allowed to grow from this side shoot and be treated in the same manner. Where plants have not been mulched, it should be done at once. It requires plenty of plant food to produce good cucumbers. We like to mix bone meal and pulverized sheep manure in equal parts and give the beds a fairly good covering. If the roots are not too near the surface, hoe this in lightly; if they are near, just scratch and rub it in. After a week or 10 days put on a mulch of coarse manure; cow is best but horse will do. An excellent plan is to spread fresh manure on a good piece of land, rather heavily, and then run a disc harrow over often enough to break up the ma- nure, mix some soil with it and then apply. It should be rather heavy, say two inches deep. It helps to give a uniform moisture. Marketman. Indoor Vegetables. New York, June Cucumbers— No. 1, per doz $@ Culls, per doz @ Mu
